The shake-up in the media world can no longer be overlooked: PC, blogging software and a camera are enough to get into the media industry within a few days. Full-time journalists and officials of the established journalist associations observe this development with a grim face, because the journalism profession is undergoing democratisation. More and more commonly, reader reporters are integrated into the reporting business of magazine and newspaper publishers. This offers first-class alternatives for job changers to earn several hundred to several thousand Euro as a part-time journalist.

3. Presscards in Europe: many countries - different presscards

Within the European Union there are no regulations regarding which associations are allowed to issue presscards. There are also no “superior” presscard from the European Union. The reason for this lies in the freedom of the press and of reporting. An official or state recognition of presscards might possibly lead to the situation that only a few certain members of the press receive a presscard. This should be avoided for the sake of journalistic freedom, which is why there are not state or official press passes in most democratic countries. Professional and industry associations (e. g. like GNS Press) or trade unions take on this role and issue presscards; although in accordance with the country-specific laws no priority is give to any organisation.
